The Zambia Women's Hockey5s team was honoured today at a send-off ceremony in Lusaka, ahead of their departure tomorrow for the 2024 FIH Hockey5s Women's World Cup in Oman. The tournament runs from 24-28 January 2024.
National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) Secretary General Boniface Kambikambi graced the ceremony and gave remarks. He noted that NOCZ has been impressed with the development of the hockey team.
"In the build-up to this World Cup, we have worked closely with the Zambia Hockey Association to ensure the team is ready for the upcoming World Cup," Kambikambi said.
"Most members of this team have been on an inspiring journey from Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games to the Ghana 2022 Africa Cup and now Oman 2024 World Cup, competing amongst the best teams globally. Their progress has been remarkable."
Zambia Hockey Association General Secretary Elvis Bwalya thanked all stakeholders and cooperating partners, including the Government through the Ministry of Youth, Sport & Arts, for readying the team for the World Cup.
The team's head coach Floyd Chomba revealed that they have been training intensively and their fitness levels rank them among the best. "They will do whatever it takes to make the nation proud during their time in Oman," the coach said.
Zambia is placed in Pool B alongside Australia, South Africa, and Ukraine. They kick off their World Cup campaign on 24th January against South Africa.
Representatives from the National Sports Council of Zambia, OYDC Zambia, and ZSIC Life were also present, having provided sponsorship support to the team among other sponsors.
